Computing Facilities in the Department of Physics

The new Lexmark 710 Color Laser Printer

The department owns a 3ppm A4 Color Laser Printer (level 3 postscript, PCL5) that can be accessed by members of the Department of Physics. It resides in room 213 Oliphant Wing, and Bob Hurn (room 117 Oliphant wing) is the best person to speak to about using the printer. We stock standard paper and transparencies. Please do NOT use your own materials as the printer can be damaged if incorrect sheets are precessed.

Color laser printers use quite different processes when printing to transparencies as opposed to plain/gloss paper. Users should ensure they are printing to the correct tray, and if using manual feeds, that the manual tray is set to the type of sheet being used.

Because of the high cost of materials there will be a charge per sheet at the following rates:

There is a book next to the printer where people record their usage.

The Unix print queue name for this printer is lm117. To help control usage, the queue is not available on every machine in the department. It is definitely accessible on "bragg", and some groups also have it set up on selected machines. The Novell queue is longer, detailing the printer type, the room number and building/department.

For the convenience of users, some selected Windows printer drivers are available. Unix needs no special drivers since the printer understands postscript natively.
